| For the past four years I’ve been leading parties to the San River in search of the vast shoals of grayling and trout. Why not join me in 2011 to fish in the wilds of south east Poland where fly hatches can last the best part of a day, offering a dry fly experience of a lifetime.
We have 2 separate weeks available in 2011:
Week 1: Sun 9th Oct to Sun 16th Oct (6 full days fishing and 7 nights accom).
Week 2: Sun 16th Oct to Sun 23th Oct (6 full days fishing and 7 nights accom).
As the San boasts one of the highest fish counts per kilometer, sport really is second to none. In recent years the San has seen an explosion in the brown trout population. Trout average 1lb though much larger fish are not unheard of with 3lb plus specimens turning up regularly. Specimen grayling of up to 50cm are present throughout the San. I’d say the average grayling will be 35cm with a sprinkling of larger fish of 40cm plus. Widespread throughout the system, grayling population have to be seen to be believed.
With massive hatches of Blue Winged Olives and Pale Wateries throughout autumn, the fishing on offer is second to none. Normally, fly hatches start about 11-ish in the morning and can last until dark, so dry fly and spider fishing will be our major tactics. I kid you not, during the height of a hatch, you really can’t decide on where to cast next! There is also an excellent fly shop in Sanok (20 mins from lodge) that we tend to visit for an hour to see and buy some unusual materials/hooks/flies etc. The local flies are truly stunning which anyone who has visited will readily vouch for. Don’t worry, I won’t let this eat into fishing time, as the San river flows through Sanok and is a mere 5 mins from the shop...
Situated in the Lukawica region, our Guest House is located in the rural village of Bieszczady, right on the banks of the San, so we have fishing on the doorstep. However the 7 kilometre no kill stretch upstream involves a mere 10-20 minute drive, depending on where we chose to fish each day. All very relaxed as our guide is usually willing to ferry people about, so we can spilt into groups to suit. Our fishing guides speak excellent English and are extremely helpful.
The accommodation is comfortable with ensuite bathrooms and based on two people sharing a room the cost is £895 per person. This also includes, transfers, fishing permits, breakfast, lunch and evening meal. In fact everything is included except your flight (see below), evening tipple and gratuities to guides. Given the current economy this represents excellent value for money.
Flights can be booked with Ryanair from Birmingham International airport (usually departing at approx 7.00am) to Rzeszow airport with a duration of approx 2 hours 5 mins. The drive to Bieszczady takes approx 1hr 20mins. As personal details are now required, we advise that you book your own flight on: www.ryanair.com it’s all straightforward and I will be available to talk people through this process if necessary. However, if you prefer, Pioneer are able to do this for you, please contact me regarding this.
